How can I make my “bad” vampires scarier?

let me guess… you just read twilight and it was ssssoooo ‘good’, it inspired you to write a book yourself about vampires…. ugh. vampires are ssssoooo over used and cliched. maybe you should make up your own creature or something.

Make them completely competent, more so than your protagonist. If they’re better, they can beat you, and they’re scarier.
You can also make them more indifferent to violence than violent. They don’t love torturing and slaughtering innocents, they just do it cuz they can. Or maybe one of them loves it, but the scariest one doesn’t. Contrast them to make different attributes in each bad vamp seem worse.
I can’t think of anything else…

Give them supernatural powers acquired through black magic? Make them just randomly do evil things and kill people not because they find it fun, but because they’re bored so why not? Maybe make them bite and kill all kinds of people, but not drink their blood, to make it obvious that they were killing just for the sake of killing… Oh, and make one of their pointless killings a baby or a small child, or maybe they could especially prey on small children? I know it’s starting to sound really messed-up, but that’s what you’re looking for, right?

In order to make them scarier you must describe them in great detail. You need to make the reader believe that the vampires are scary. So, in other words, describe how the “bad” vampires look. Make them have red eyes and long fingernails! Good Luck!
