How can I allow my vampires to walk in daylight?

Written by admin on . Posted in Books & Authors

Melanie F asked:

I’m writing a young adult novel about vampires … and they need to be able to walk in sunlight. My first instinct was sunscreen … but I’d love any other opinions. They definitely need to be out during the day. Maybe it can just be for short periods of time? I don’t want to go the Stephenie Meyer route and make their appearance change in sunlight.

Just completely erase the myth about sensitivity to sunlight. You can tweak vampires however you want to. Meyer made them glitter and she still became a bestseller, didn’t she?

Have them wear dark sunglasses. Because they’re fictional anyway, they will never know the difference.

You could just make it totally original – and have it be ok for them to walk into the light. Screw all of the original theories about vampires – come up with your own.

Maybe they could drink some kind of medication or something. So many drugs out there for other things after all………….

maybe their skin can change to appear the same as other creatures – like a chameleonon, and it would also have the same qualities as the thing it copies – like human able to be in the sun

i think you could be a lot more creative than sunscreen

It’s called Twilight fanfiction. They sparkle.

At any rate, everyone will assume it is – so, to be honest, I’d either write fanfic and get the advantage of the enormous ready-made audience, or I’d write something else. YA vampire stories which “really aren’t Twilight” are just not going to be taken seriously for the next year or so.

I would opt for more of a christine feehan approach. Her vampires can be in the sun for short amounts of time as they get older. They slowly expose themselves to sunlight (while being covered up of course) and eventually they can stand being in the sun for a few hours. It makes sense to me. I would go ahead and have them covered in trench coats and have on sunscreen and sunglasses. Or you could opt for a more blade-like approach and have them be day and night walkers, but have them weaken in the daylight or something.

Or, as my dad told me to add, You’re trying to make them too human. You can be as creative as you want because they are not human. you could make it so if they drank the blood of an animal that thrived in daylight, that the vampire could borrow that animals essence for awhile and be in the sun. Of if they mixed some plants that grow in super sunny places in with the blood it would give them temporary immunity.

I agree with Lyra Wants a Grand Piano. That was what I was going to say. It’s YOUR book and YOUR vampires, you can make them any way you want. The first person to write about vampires made them unable to go out into sunlight, they wrote it the way they wanted. You can too.

I’m sure my style is somewhat strange to you But I thought this. What if they can move in sunlight since all the evil in the people around them (evil in this world) creates such a dense darkness (metaphorically) that it shadows them from sunlight rays.

You’re the author, if you want to deem the whole vamps-only-come-out-at-night thing a myth, then do it.

Hey, um hello *waves*, are we on the same planet? Cause last time I checked in writing there weren’t really any rules. MAKE UP WHATEVER THE **** YOU WANT (no I didn’t really swear right there those are just aterisks for effect :) - anyway, you can make them do whatever you want. Make them turn into rabbits for all I care. Heck you can even make them walk in daylight with ABSOLUTELY no consequence, just like “normal” humans. I mean there’s no rules that says you can’t when you write a story. Of course depending on who’s reading it, this depends on how they take it and whether or not they like it. Some people like some vampires more than others, of course you can make them how you want, some people might not like them, but that’s the price you pay I guess, but I’m sure most people (practically all) wouldn’t mind a change in pace for vampyres.

How about theres a scientist that makes a secret garlic potion, it makes vampires walk in sunlight but every time they use it, it slowly kills them.

First, keep in mind that any traditional restriction you remove on the vampire myth makes them more powerful overall – leading to the question of why they haven’t taken over the world. Be very sure you want to do that before deciding.

One option is simply to make them significantly weaker in daylight, unable to use their other supernatural abilities, maybe even weaker than a normal human.

Another way, that doesn’t destroy the myth quite so much, is to make some form of magic that gives one or a few vamps the ability to day-walk. You can make it limited by time, restricted on how often, limit it to just the one wearing the ring or the cape or whatever…all sorts of possible restrictions.

i like what steph meyer did, that was a very good compromise to the whole vampires can not be in the sun at all. she gave them boundaries. i guess sun screen could work though.

its about vampires, so clearly its a fantasy styled book. make the vampires do whatever they want. i know you don’t want to take the stephenie meyer route, but you could just go the original route. not all vampires are unable to walk outside, make it how you want to make it.
originality is why different books sell big. make yours unique,
    hope this helped, good luck

Burning in sunlight is one of their debatable traits. Meaning that while in some stories they cannot in others they can.

You can make it so that they can walk around in sunlight if you choose so but you can also put a twist on it like a time limit.

    - A few possibilities –
    – make them half vampires / half human -
    – have them appear only when there is a total eclipse of the sun.
    – suspend disbelief about vampires and set up your own sense of reality in your book.; it’s fiction anyway, some rules can be bent.

well maybe they can go out for only an hour or two because the sun affects their skin but they don’t explode like in those cheesy vampire movies.
