Do you think if I write a book about vampires people will automatically think I copied Twilight?
Toph asked:
The idea for the book just came to me. The only similarities it has with Twilight is the fact that both of our vampires drink blood, there will be no sparkling, no floral smells, and definitely no more cliches about love. It also doesn’t involve an abusive boyfriend.
I didn’t think that people will say I am copying Twilight, I just want to make sure because that would be terribly annoying.

Sorry – due to the current obsession with all things vampiric it is exceedingly likely that anything to do with this sort of matter will be considered a knockoff.
If you must write about paranormal things, much better to write about something along the lines of gnomes.

I don’t think that people would draw that conclusion. Vampire books are a big hit right now, so I would research other books carefully to make sure your idea is original. If you are planning to have your vampires drink animal blood, readers may think you have pulled ideas from Twilight. I’d just say be as original as you can possibly be and you should be able to pull it off.

I don’t think that people would think that you’re copying Twilight. Just make sure to use a different style of writing, and don’t have huge similar things ex; “vegetarians”, sparkly vamps, red/amber/black eyes, etc.

Yes and no. Just don’t put vampires or anything obviously vampire-ish in the title or beginning of the story. “Hook” the reader first

Only Twilighters may think that. However, everyone else (aka normal people) will definitely not question your writing. It’s not like Stephenie Meyer owns the vampire genre… because if she did we would live in a twisted and terrible place.

it’s not really that you would be copying twilight, there is a ton of vampire books out right now, and its the popular thing to read. so people would automatically think you are copying the idea.
But really, there were vampire books out before twilight was available right?

Well,
I for one love stories about ACTUAL vampires, and as long as there’s no crap about, “I sparkle!” or, “I love you, but I can’t, oh but my feelings are just way to strong!” Then I wouldn’t say anything about someone writing about vampires. God, I hate that Stephenie Meyer has made it to where someone can’t say, “I’m writing a book about vampires.” without someone saying, “You mean like Twilight?” It’s so stupid.

No of course not. If your book has any depth and is actually good you are not copying twilight. Some fan girls who think twilight is the Bible will say that but what can you do about them. They have never read another book in their lives. Vampires are not copyrightable. I mean they have been around since before Bram Stoker’s Dracula so no need to worry. If you write a vampire story it will be your own. If anyone says you are copying twilight, than they are just plain crazy.

Some people might, but just ignore them. I’ve read plenty of great vampire books and didn’t see any similarities at all with Twilight, and i’m a huge fan of twilight

Based on your description, I’d say that there’s nothing wrong with writing such a book. If anyone does say you knocked off Twilight, just say “try reading the book before you call it a knockoff.”

Well the fact is that all vampires drink blood. It’s their animal nature. Now people comparing it to Twilight is possible. But they could also compare it to the other great vampire series that are in circulation. Your vampires may be like the dark-hunters in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s novels. Or like the Argeneau’s in Lyndsy Sands novels. You just have to make your vampire’s unique and make them stand out from all the others. I have myself written two short stories that have been compare to Twilight, but thats alright with me because that’s where I got my inspiration from. Just be yourself in your writing and be creative, you never know what you’ll come up with.

As long as you aren’t copying or using to many similarities to the Twilight…genre….I don’t think anyone with half a brain would say you were copying it.
Vamps are popular right now so there are a lot of books being pushed because of the theme right now. If you were looking for some research to make sure your idea was original the ‘Blood Ties’ series by Jennifer Armintrout is good, and anything by Anne Rice.

If you have a good idea, it’s new and different, and you can write, I would defiantly encourage you to do that. I do have to say that, because of this topic (vampires) becoming such a fad, people may draw that conclusion. For instance, I was trying to get some character name ideas for a novel I want to write, it has to do with otherworldly (‘alien’) beings on another planet. (lol, sounds cheesy ik, but it isn’t. ;p) It is nothing like twilight, and yet because it had to do with science-fictionish, fantasy, romanceish kinda stuff…the first reply was telling me that it was copying twilight…so yeah. Anyway, there were other ppl who replied telling me not to listen to that half-wit, haha, and that helped. Sorry for making this soo long, but I just say screw it…do/write what you want to. Meyer isn’t that fantastical (even tho i read all four).

Toph at this point I’ve heard some obsessed fans accuse both Anne Rice and JL Smith of copying off Meyer. Any vampire book whether published before or after Meyer gets that accusation. Just ignore it and write what you feel sounds good. People will read it for what you bring to the table. If they go around accusing you of copying off Meyer than that’s their fault for putting on those blinders.

If you write well, there shouldn’t be any problem with people thinking you copied Twilight.

Well, most Twilighters don’t realise that there were vampire books before Twilight. Stephenie Meyer did not invent them, she just mutilated them.
Twilighters will probably think you are ripping her off. Non-Twilighters will acknowledge the differences.

No, as long as you don’t copy some of the obvious ideas of her book. Like the extra powers, animals instead of people, the eye colors. Forbidden love might be kind of iffy too, but it depends on how you use it. I mean there are already plenty of vampire books out that are totally different from twilight that you cant even compare to it. Actually the extra powers you might be able to use it just depends on how you tie it in to your story. Be careful about the vampires having powers in earth, wind, fire, water, and spirit. That’s used in a lot of other vampire books. Well hope i helped, good luck and happy writing!!
