My Right Earlobe…and Other Original Storylines
It was a bright and sunny morning……
Well, that doesn’t have quite the same kick as, “It was a dark and stormy night….” , and to be honest, that opening line is probably wearing a little thin around literary circles as well.
Recently, a writer friend of mine told me about a little exercise he and some others had started participating in called “Wordstock 2007″. The idea of the exercise is that you have to sit down and write a short story every week before the stroke of midnight on Sunday (Otherwise you apparently morph into Mr.Squiggle …I have yet to test this theory.)
I love things like this, as it forces you to get those creative juices flowing and write! And, as you know, writing is something I do so love to do. The flip side of partaking in this challenge is that I have to get past that dreaded first line. This is (and I am sure there are countless other scribes who would be biting the last stumps of their pencils.. in agreement) the hardest part of the whole process. Once I nail that little hurdle, the rest seems to follow very quickly and easily.
Still…it’s not always a simple task….
Not that long ago, I had a wonderful idea for a blog piece, yet I spent hours upon hours thinking of how to introduce the subject matter. In a last ditch ,desperate effort I simply typed:
SEX!!! BUCKETS OF IT!!! BRING YOUR OWN GOAT!!!
…and then went on to type a witty little piece about Telstra.
Somehow though, this method didn’t really bring me the results I truly desired. Oh, don’t get me wrong- the piece got a lot of views… and roughly 2000 Friend requests from people like “Mr Big 4 U” and ” Hot Farmer Dan” ( and please, don’t bother scrolling through my blogs to find the article. I promptly deleted it when I received a message from one of said “Friends” asking me if he could bring his pet pig , since sexy goats were apparently scarce in his part of rural Arkansas.)
I guess with a creative assignment like “Wordstock”, the other challenge is to consistently come up with different ideas. I have been writing articles for years, but have never launched into the “Great Novel Of Our Time” thing, simply because I am still hunting for that elusive idea about which I can pen “The Great Novel”.
Think about it….
It’s hard to come up with one truly original idea. Everything has been pretty well covered over the years: …people going back in time, people going forward in time, boy loves girl, girl loves boy…boy turns out to be gay with a cling-wrap fetish. We have had war stories, peace stories, stories about vampires (and no, I am not talking about John Howard’s most recent biography) along with other monsters. There have been fantasy novels, tales from the Crypt, and of course, murder mysteries by the thousands.
Seriously, how many ways can you dispose of someone, and more importantly, if butlers are quite often the guilty party, why are people still hiring the homicidal little bastards?
So, until I wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night with the storyline of the century, I will keep writing about the silly things that happen in and around my life. I could write pages about a box of staples….or even my left foot, but it would probably bore the pants off you.
What’s that? Someone…already….wrote about their left foot? Made millions of dollars…?? Put Daniel Day-Lewis on the MAP???
D’OH!!!
