Girl Power; the Shakespearean Way
Many females growing up in the mid 1900′s – 2000′s could be forgiven for feeling that they coined the phrase ‘Girl Power’. It was certainly a time of female assertion seeing the rise of such phenomenon asThe Spice Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lara Croft, Xena Princess Warrior, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Charlie’s Angels (2000 version).
But it was rife long before then; even before Margaret Thatcher’s day. The time I am referring to is the 17th Century. A time when the Great Bard himself fell pray to the power of women; one in particular, Queen Elizabeth I.
This is evidenced by Nicolas Rowe, in his Life of Shakespeare (1709), where he reports that the Queen “was so well pleased with that admirable character of Falstaff in the 2 parts of Henry IV that she commanded him to continue it for one play more, and to show him in love.” From this decree, The Merry Wives of Windsor was penned. But it doesn’t stop there.
By the end of the play Sir John Falstaff gets his comeuppance at the hands of Mistress Page and Mistress Ford as they humiliate him several times once they learn that his wooing is a plot to gain financial advantage. So there you are ladies, ‘Girl Power’ is centuries old. Why not celebrate the fact by heading off to The Globe to watch, laugh and enjoy Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece. The SaVVy Club® are organising a truly memorable evening on the 5th October 2008 – the final performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor.
