Godsmack a band from Boston Massachusetts active from 1996. Alice in Chains is believed to be the primary influence upon Godsmack. In early interviews, the band admitted they started off as a tribute band to Alice in Chains. In an interview with MTV upon the death of Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley, Godsmack frontman Sully Erna stated that Staley “was single-handedly the guy that got me to start singing.” Other bands cited by Godsmack members as their primary influences typically include Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pearl Jam and Black Sabbath. More recently, Godsmack have attempted to distance themselves from the Alice in Chains comparison with Erna stating in an interview with Matt Ashare, “I’ve just never really heard that in our music.” Nevertheless, the comparisons to Alice in Chains are well documented. Sully Erna’s style of singing mirrors that of Layne Staley’s while the overall sound of the band’s first two albums sound incredibly similar to the sound of Dirt. The logo of Godsmack is similar to the sun logo of Alice in Chains. Godsmack also released an album titled “Faceless” which is similar in name to Alice in Chain’s first album Facelift. The band’s name is identical to the title of an Alice In Chains song from the album Dirt. The band even transcended from their heavy sound to a more mellow acoustic sound on their album The Other Side in the same manner Alice in Chains did in Sap and Jar of Flies.
In 2002, Godsmack received a Grammy nomination in “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” for the song “Vampires” from the album Awake. In 2004, they were opening for Metallica, while headlining with Dropbox in the summer. Then they did acoustic shows for their newly released album The Other Side in the fall of 2004, while still opening for Metallica. In September 2004, Godsmack issued a live DVD titled “Changes,” (it went gold, according to RIAA) which the band recorded earlier that year. That same month, the group also released “Batalla de los Tambores,” a live cut available only via online services such as Apple’s iTunes Music Store, Real and Napster. Their latest single “Speak” was released on February 14, 2006 and their album titled IV was released April 25, 2006. According to an interview with Sully a new international tour is slated to begin in June and touring in the states will begin in September. IV debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 211,000 copies in its first week.

Vampires Judas

Kraken by China Miéville

The author of Kraken, China Miéville is passionate about the city London. The author has already won several awards for portraying the city in different lights for his several books. China Miéville now says the city is going to be destroyed by the tentacles of a giant squid. Definitely, he is not the first author to say so, but the readers are sure to have most fun while reading his version.

 

The main story is about the museum curator Billy Harrow who wants to recover his exhibit, the giant squid Architeuthis. The city of London is full of cults and magic though the readers never get the hint the author is going to come up with some unexpected puns and deliberately playful lines throughout the forthcoming pages of Kraken.

Jokey Tone Throughout The Book

 

The voice adopted by the author China Miéville also has a jokey tone, which is a pleasant surprise especially after the last novel which had a very serious tone. The attempt seems deliberate, since China Miéville may have thought of flexing his creative muscles somewhat after the previous serious novel.  Although the squid is gigantic in the story, the cast is much more than just the squid. There is also the foul mouthed policeman and the union leader who reincarnates as an action toy and men who become giant fists.

The Story Is Overblown And China Miéville Knows It

 

The story definitely is overblown and it’s not that China Miéville, the author of Kraken doesn’t know it. His imagination is definitely working overtime when he pokes fun at the urban fantasy genre. The imagination of China Miéville is truly prodigious and he playfully dissects the genre that gave us huge successes like Harry Potter, Twilight, The Dresden Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While the body of urban fantasy genre has been tackled rather well, the heart couldn’t get the same treatment, though the novel Kraken is still complex and thrilling at the same time.

Characters Weighed Down By The Plot

 

The weight of ideas of the author and plot weigh heavily on the characters none of which come out very clearly in the novel Kraken. For example, when the curator of the museum is told his prized exhibit was keystone of a cult and that may be they want him to infiltrate their cult, what they might be thinking of Billy, John the Baptist or Judas? There are times when the pages of the novel seem too long to some of the readers, though the fun still remains there for most of the readers.

When we last saw the girls, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) was marrying Big at City Hall, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) was a new mom, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) was saying yes to her marriage while on the Brooklyn Bridge, and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was celebrating the big 5-oh by moving back to New York from L.A. This year, they all turn into vampires. OK, fine, they don’t — but you go and try to find plot developments in this, the sequel to the ultimate chick flick. Carrie & Co. have a permanent place in female moviegoers’ hearts.

 

 8. ”The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” (June 30).

 

Speaking of vamps, the third go-round for Stephenie Meyer’s Washington-based occult soap opera finds Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) applying to college while being hunted by rival vampires. Meanwhile, werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his wolf pack need Bella and Edward’s help in solving a series of murders. If a giant clove of garlic dropped on Hollywood, it couldn’t stop this series’ appeal to audiences.

 

9. ”Salt” (July 23).

 

Angelina Jolie takes time off from appearing on magazine covers to play a sexy-tough CIA spy falsely tagged as a Russian double-agent. While trying to stop an attempt on the U.S. President’s life, Salt also has to find the real killer and clear her name. Liev Schreiber co-stars. Jolie in butt-kicking mode (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) always trumps Jolie in serious mode (“Changeling”). Just ask Brad Pitt.

Instead of the stereotypical vampires replicated over and over throughout the years, the book has introduced us to a fairly different set of vampires. Rather than being portrayed as pure evil, we are welcomed into the world of conscience-ridden vampires that could choose to feast on human blood or jeopardize their existence by denying their nature.

Edward Cullen

Edward Cullen (Edward Anthony Cullen) was born in June 20, 1901. He was saved by Dr. Carlisle Cullen to grant Elizabeth’s (Edward’s mother) dying wish. However, the only way to do so is to transform him into a vampire—a scary creature of the night that doesn’t eat, sleep, breathe or age. Frozen in his 17-year old body, Edward has survived the century by feasting on animal blood.

He instantly fell in love with Bella as soon as she arrives in Forks. Fighting the urge to kill her because of his nature and wanting to love her, he faces a bout with himself almost throughout the story.

Jacob Black

He is werewolf who is later revealed to be a shape-shifter as he doesn’t transform on a full moon. Being Bella’s best friend, he’s determined to protect and stand by her no matter what.

Carlisle Cullen

Having brought compassion from his human life, Carlisle Cullen spent most of his early years as a vampire in perfecting his resistance to human bloodlust and becoming a doctor. In the book, we are told of Carlisle’s love affair with Esme and how he transformed her into a vampire to save her life. He also transformed Rosalie Hale and Emmett into vampires.

Esme Cullen

She is the wife of Carlisle and adoptive mother to Edward, Rosalie, Alice and Emmett. She has no special power, but has a strong ability to love passionately. She committed suicide because she couldn’t bear the pain of her son’s death. It was in this condition when she was transformed into a vampire by Carlisle.

Rosalie Hale

Beautiful and alluring, Rosalie Hale is one of these scary creatures of the night adopted by Carlisle and Esme. In the book, we see her as a repulsive character for always undermining Bella. But in the latter chapters, we find that the reason behind such callous behavior is her insecurity towards Bella Swan’s mortality. Wanting to be mortal herself, Rosalie tries to convince Bella to stay as she is and not transform as a vampire.

Emmett Cullen

His curls and innocent appearance reminded Rosalie of her dead son. Because of this, she decided to take Emmett back to her father to transform him into a vampire. Emmett is married to Rosalie Hale.

Alice Cullen

This petite vampire with a graceful gait has a special ability to see the outcome of a decision once it is made. She also uses this ability to help Bella to surpass the dangers that await her.
When she was still a mere mortal, she was sent into an asylum for having premonitions. She later learned that she was transformed into a vampire to protect her from another vampire that haunts her.

Jasper Hale

He was transformed into a scary creature of the night when he was 20 and soon developed the ability to manipulate the emotions of people around him. Due to his past, where he was able to feed on humans whenever he chose, Jasper lacks strong self-control to feast on human blood. In addition, his body is covered with crescent-shaped scars, after the many years of fighting and training newborn vampires.
